We’ve used this product demo process to train teams that close millions in software sales. A great software demo has a handful of key components.
The six things every demo needs
Here are 6 things, at a minimum, you must include in a great software product demo:
- Learn about your prospect (current activities and pain points / things they want).
- Tell them what you will show them.
- Demo the product based on learnings from step 1.
- Be concise.
- Check in often.
- Determine the next steps and book it before you leave.
Where AI does the work
AI now handles the parts of the demo process that used to eat your prep time, and the template is built around that. Step 0 is the pre-demo brief: give an AI tool the prospect’s website, LinkedIn profiles, and any public information, and it produces a one-page brief so you walk into the call already knowing them. During the demo, your notetaker captures the conversation so you can stay in it. Afterward, AI drafts the follow-up email from the call notes, and every touch in the follow-up sequence if the next call slips. You review and send. The fundamentals in the template haven’t changed. The preparation is faster and sharper.
What’s in the template
- Step 0. Before the demo. The AI pre-research brief, and how to prep your demo environment to match.
- Step 1. Start of demo. Five to ten minutes of discovery, and the three things you need to learn.
- Step 2. The demo. Twenty minutes, your key value propositions, plus example section and pricing slides you replace with your own.
- Step 3. End of demo and closing. Decision criteria, what interested them, and booking the next step while you’re still on the call.
- Step 4. Post demo. The same-day checklist.
- Step 5. Post-demo follow-up. The four-touch sequence if the next call slips.
